Jesus wanted them to understand that giving wasn't to be done to impress others but to be done in secret. The way of the world is to give in order to attract attention to oneself or to try and show how they are better than others but Jesus says those people have their reward. Our giving should be done privately giving glory only to God and for His praise. When we give in response to His prompting we find the very act to be a great present reward.
