Jesus tells them that His purpose in coming was not to do away with the Law but to fulfill it. The purpose of the Law was not to show us a path to righteousness but to show us the sinfulness of our sin and our desperate need for a Savior. Through His perfect sacrifice on the cross and resurrection He accomplished all for us. Self-righteousness will get no one into a kingdom life. Righteousness is a gift that we receive.
